Baby Dolls and Chemises

Chemises are an item of women’s clothing that resemble a nighty or bed wear, however are injected with an element of promiscuousness. They operate on the same classification; loose fitting, predominantly made from silk, have two standard shoulder straps. However, chemises are much more sexually alluring than a nighty and are often designed to look both revealing and provocative.  The term chemise was born out of France, and simply translates as ‘shirt’’. It was originally worn by Gallic men and was deemed a trendy garment for evening or casual affairs. However as time has progressed it has become a popular item of lingerie in female clothing.

Chemises are popular with a lot of women due to their multi-functionality. Although they are classified under lingerie, they are not as daring as body stockings or a thong or g-string, which means that they can abide by any situation. They can double up as a nighty or evening garment, and although you probably wouldn’t want to parade around in one in front of your father, you could get away with opening the door to the postman.

Chemises were considered very popular during the seventies and eighties, a decade where the vault of women’s lingerie is nowhere near as vast as it is today. However as the sector became more accepted and diverse these gowns became considered drab and outdated. However, the many different styles of chemise may be why they have enjoyed such a renaissance of late, enjoying a section of their own in almost all women’s underwear departments.
