Tights

Tights, as you might expect, are the tight-fitting garments worn predominantly by women. They have their place both in regular women’s consumer shopping as well as specialist departments. A permanent fixture in any woman’s wardrobe, the opportunities are endless when it comes to tights.

There are many reasons for wearing tights. For starters, they are particularly popular during the winter months in this country as they are a great way to keep warm. Unwilling to substitute the summer mini skirt for a pair of dull black trousers, tights are the obvious solution to keep your style whatever the season. They can also be worn for the simple reason of comfort. Often jeans or leggings can be quite restricting, a problem not associated with tights.

The history of wearing tights stretches back to the middle ages, where it was actually men who integrated them into society. They were a popular garment, especially for those riding horseback, due to their comfort and close fitting nature. This meant that they were less likely to restrict or impede when riding. The nobility would wear tights made out of silk or fine wool, whereas the lower classes would have to make do with cheaper alternatives.

Tights have come a long way since the 1600’s though. For a start, it is now women who wear the trousers so to speak. So much their development has progressed, that they command their own section in the majority of lingerie selections. A pair of exotic tights is occasionally the perfect accompaniment to a saucy outfit.
